search discovered the bodies of two more marines, a man and woman. the gunman apparently shot the woman dead before turning the gun on himself in what appeared to be a murder-suicide. all three victims were enlisted, not officers and were instructors at the office candidate school. the lockdown lifted. quantico is back up and running this morning, but this tightly knit marine community is in shock. >> as we take care of our marines and their families that are dealing with this tragedy, i'd also ask for the support of our neighbors, the community and their thoughts and prayers, as well for our marines who have lost their comrades in arms. >> reporter: sources tell us that the shooter was a sergeant. the two other victims were corporals. there was a gun found at the scene, which appears to be a personal weapon. the investigation is now underway. >> all right.

jim miklaszewski in quantico for us this morning. thank you very much. . new information on the brazen murder of a colorado prison official. police are investigating a possible connection to a high-speed chase in texas involving a paroled white supremacist. nbc's kristin dahlgren following those developments. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of surprising twists and turns in this case after the high-speed chase and gun battle hundreds of miles from here. it was a wild chase and shootout. in the end, it may provide the answers colorado investigators have been looking for. two days after tom clemens, the head of colorado's prison system was gunned down at his own front door, investigators suspect this may have been the end of a violent crime spree by a man sources tell nbc affiliate kusa is colorado parolee and known

white supremacist evan spencer. the colorado officials have traveled to texas to try to determine if the crimes are linked. the case gained nationwide attention on tuesday night when clemens was gunned down after opening his front door. at the time, a dark car was seen idling outside. thursday, a ten-hour drive from clemmen's home in colorado, in texas, authorities came across a similarity in a routine traffic stop. >> there are some similarities. >> reporter: as more police officers crossed his path he opened fire again. >> he came by me he was running about hundred miles an hour. had the left arm out the window just shooting. >> reporter: after colliding with an 18 wheel they are suspect got out and kept firing until officers shot him. >> we have been told he is legally deceased.

>> reporter: inside the mangled car maybe one more clue in to the suspect's final days. a pizza delivery uniform that denver police may believe maybe linked to the murder of a domino's delivery man on sunday. that man was nathan leon. his family has been trying to figure out why anyone would kill the father of three. that uniform may be why the opened the door. families are waiting for ballistics tests. >> a quick programming note. the issue of gun violence will be on "meet the press" david gregory will talk to michael erg and the executive vice president of the nra. potential security breach on the runway at philadelphia international airport to tell you about this morning. a man arrested for impersonating a pilot while boarding a flight to florida.

pete williams is our justice correspondent. what can you tell us? >> local authorities say as far as they can tell it didn't present a threat to the plane but are pursuing charges and trying to figure out why it happened. police accuse a 60-year-old man from france philippe genar for pretending to be a pilot for air france. they say on wednesday evening he was a ticketed passenger for a u.s. airways passenger. at the gate they say he was wearing what appeared to be part of an air france uniform and demandening a upgrade to business class but he was turned down. on the plane, as they say, as it continued to board he talked his way in to the cockpit and said he was a pilot that wanted to sit in a jump suit but the crew became suspicious. >> able to realize quickly through observation that he didn't belong there. >> police charged him with trespass, impersonating a private employee and having a

>> chicago public official schools plan to close the 54 schools in an effort to make a dent in a $1 billion budget deficit, make better use of resources and improve overall education here in the nation's third largest school district. >> i don't think it's going to be good for my kids. >> reporter: the news of the school closings continues to ripple across chicago this morning. >> i'm, just don't know where they're going to go. >> reporter: mayor rahm emmanuel says the closures are necessary after too much money was being spent on maintaining underutilized school buildings saying "by consolidating these schools, chicago public schools can focus on safely getting every child into a better performing school. like school systems in new york and philadelphia, where schools are being closed, chicago must make tough choices." a number of teachers may lose their jobs as a result of the closings. karen lewis. of the teachers' union lashed

murdoch, the ex-wife of rupert murdoch, back in 1999. sue ann, an economist and a lawyer, who once worked for hamm's company, continental resources claims in court filings that harold was unfaithful during their marriage. according to harold the couple separated back in 2005 and have lived separate lives ever since. hamm, worth more than $11 billion, was listed by "forbes" as one of the 50 richest americans in 2012 and named by "time" magazine one of the most influential people in the world. >> this is the king kong of divorce cases. sue ann stands to make lots and lots of money, more than is really on the table. >> reporter: expensive divorces are nothing new. according to "forbes" magazine, neil diamond's divorce from his first wife cost him an estimated $150 million. newly engaged michael jordan's divorce an estimated $168 million, while harrison ford

good friday morning. san jose police are looking for a hit-and-run driver that killed a ped on interstate 2:30 around 3:15 this morning. police received a call. there was a body in the roadway near the mclaughlin avenue exit. they have called in a biohazmat crew to clean up the scene. it could take three or four hours to clean up. they are looking for witnesses and trying to figure out why td woman was walking on 280 in the first place. want to check the morning commute. are we still seeing a problem on 280? >> this is 101. look at the entire south bay. your northbound route all pretty much green except for 280. slows a slows around the 880 interchange. south 280 approaching mclaughlin from seventh. the on ramp, which is closed all the way down toward mclaughlin. we have slowing. look at the northbound side.

plane american airlines asks what if passengers with no overhead luggage got on next. >> if you have only one carry on item you may join in boarding at this time. >> reporter: american is testing that boarding process n ft. lauderda lauderdale, austin, baltimore and washington, dulles. to some it would appear logical. >> the less stuff you have to move the quicker it will go. >> reporter: on thursday flight 1031 from ft. lauder da toil dallas had 2 passengers board with no suitcases for the overhead bins. is it faster? >> seems like it. i hope so. >> people need to check their bags. they fill up all the compartments taking three and four carry-ones. >> reporter: immediately suspicion from those with roller boards waiting to board. >> i got 20 bucks says most people put their bags in the overhead compartment instead of under their seat. >> reporter: american's flight attendants are policing that behavior. passengers pay $25 for the first bag, some travel agents wonder if this is another way to increase revenues. >> if they gave the first free bag to the passenger, then a lot

people when they are sent to serve time with adult criminals and often placed in solitary confinement for their own age. ted joins us now. >> good morning, mat. >> reporter: juveniles are segregated from the adults but sometimes place inside solitary confinement. we found that isolation has devastating consequences. i spoke to a young man who says he served most of his time in prison in the hole. when define d -- kevin dumont was 15, he ended up in an he adult prison for an attempted ashl armed robbery when he was 13. kevin is bipolar, so it didn't help that he spent much of his time in solitary confinement. sometimes he would lash out. the helmet, the restraints were to keep kevin from smashing his head against the walls of his cell. on a couple of occasions, kevin was stripped to his shorts and

hog-tied for 12 hours. can you show me? >> well, they take belly chains and put them around here, around your waist, take leg irons and put them around both and have you kneel on something like the bench of your bed and connect a chain between the back of here this ways. and down to here. so you're stuck to where you can't stand up straight. you have to walk around on your knees within your cell, so you can't stand up at all, couldn't use the bathroom and the toilet, that's where you're stuck. >> reporter: that's got to be very painful. >> it's the worst thing i ever went through. >> reporter: solitary is a place of punishment, where they put the most violent prisoners. ironically, it's also a place of security for the most vulnerable, informers, ex-cops, kids. first impression? especially on a day like this when you got the sunlight streaming in through the window, not that bad, you got a bunk, a desk, a toilet, wash basin, but it's three steps across the cell, six steps the length of it.

that's your world, the entirety of it. 23 hours a day, day after day, week after week, month after month. that's what starts to work on your mind. how much time do you estimate that you spent in your cell? >> on the weekends, it was usually the whole 48, but on average, i'd say 22 hours a day in my cell. >> reporter: did anyone ever explain to you why you were kept in that cell 22 hours a day? >> yes. i mean, they told me for my protection. >> ted, is this happening simply because within our system, there is no other place to put these juveniles? >> it's happening because our system is way overloaded. we have 2.5 million people in prison, over 100,000 youngsters in adult prisons and jails, and to keep them secure, sometimes the only thing they can do is put them in solitary, which frequently drives them crazy. >> and they're young but also, in many cases, suffer from mental illness as well.

we are back now at 7:43 with this morning's report. you rely on fire and spoke detectors to wake up your family. jeff rossen is here with no pun intended an alarming report. >> it's eye opening and surprised us. it's hard to imagine anyone sleeping through that loud, high-pitched wail of a smoke alarm but as we all know we're parents, kids can sleep through anything. are the loud beeps enough to wake them up in a fire? this morning we're putting smoke alarms and kids to the test and what we found will take every parents' breath away. it's a terrifying thought, your house is on fire, and you can't reach your kid. the smoke alarm is going off, wailing, but believe it or not, experts say in many cases, young children will sleep right through it. could that be true?

we set up a test at this house in the connecticut suburbs, home to the hollander family, parents michelle and josh, and their three boys, 9-year-old duncan, 8-year-old hudson and 4-year-old sawyer. first we installed infrared cameras in the kids' bedrooms, then we tell the boys what we're doing, a story about sleeping and smoke detectors. >> boys, this is captain lynch. >> reporter: we even have a local fire captain give them a safety lesson. >> what would you do if you heard that sound in the middle of the night? >> i would get up, get on the ground and crawl. >> reporter: here's what we don't tell the kids, that days later, we're coming back, in the middle of the night, as they sleep, working with their parents to see how they'd react in a real fire. >> good night. >> reporter: will they wake up when that alarm sounds?

good friday morning to you. it's 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. san jose police still looking for a hit-and-run driver that killed a pedestrian on interstate 280. around 3:15 this morning, police received a call that there was a body in the roadway near the exit. caltrans had to call in a biohazmat crew to clean up this scene. it could take a little bit longer to clean it up. police looking for witnesses. they are trying to find out why the woman was walking on 280 in the first place. earlier this morning, a car was hit by a boulder in sausalito on southbound highway 101. that happened about 4:45. initially the entire roadway was blocked causing a sig alert. but the boulders and cars were moved to the side of the road. traffic able to move on by just fine. we're going to check the morning commute canned a look at that fantastic forecast coming up.
